Nick Lee’s life has never been the same ever since he was discharged from combat tours with the military. He suffered post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD that really made a big impact on himself and his family. But God, who is always in the business of rescuing his people, turned his life around.
Undiagnosed PTSD
Nick has seen the worst of the worst during his time with the US Marines and army. He has seen so much death, violence, and even nastiness in third-world countries during combat tours. These encounters in life have made him doubt God’s goodness. For him, if God is good, then why would He allow something so horrific to happen.
That’s why after his discharge, he struggled with undiagnosed PTSD. He had a difficult time returning to civilian life. Friends and family noticed something wrong with him but he would deny it.
The divorce
In 2009, he married the mother of his son, Fresca, who became a Christian 12 years earlier. But she didn’t know then that Nick suffered PTSD when they got married. She was also unaware of his anger towards God because Nick put up a good show and would tell her the things she wanted to hear. But his true colors eventually surfaced.
He would scream at his wife and son and his reactions were always so explosive. The “hellish situation” went on for 8 years until they finally divorced. But Fresca still continued to pray for Nick’s salvation despite ending their marriage.
Answered prayers
After their divorce, Nick just hit rock bottom. He was drinking excessively until he reached the point wherein he decided to kill himself with his fully loaded gun. But as he pulled the trigger, it didn’t go off. He dropped to the floor feeling overwhelmed and uncertain why the gun didn’t go off.
Then he heard God speak to him: “You must stop this and you stop the way you’re living. You’re going to die if you continue to live this way. Follow me.” Nick instantly repented everything he had done. And in that moment, God delivered him from all his hate, anger, and frustrations. It simply just went away and that night, he surrendered his life to Jesus.
He shared his experience with Fresca who noticed the change in him. He was radiating a sense of peace and even looked 10 years younger. They remarried shortly after and indeed, Nick was a changed man. God’s grace changes everything.
